Bible Reading Plan (Day 33)

DAY THIRTY-THREE — Genesis 34, Mark 5

Gen 34

I confess I had to go to some study notes so I can get the full effect of the passage.

Though not explicitly stated in the text Dinah went and paled around with the women of the land, falling into the wrong crowd. While doing so she gets put in a position where she is sweet talked by a prince who has his way with her, regardless.

Enraged, and rightly so, are the sons of Jacob. When Hamor sees this he proposes a truce, a treaty. Following in the footsteps of their father they set up a ruse. This ruse is very shameful as it uses God’s covenant symbol as the trap.

As the men are healing, Simeon and Levi slaughter and plunder. A punishment far out of proportion to the crime.

Jacob shows worry for the whole family and the brothers show their worry for their pride.

Mk 5

We hear again the story of the demon possessed man. The demons beg to be thrown into a herd of pigs and in doing so they fulfill their goal of destruction.

The people are afraid of Jesus because of his power.

Jesus commands the man to tell of who Jesus is.

This is one of my more favorite narratives. It shows two people’s great faith in who Jesus is.

Questions to Ponder:

* What do you notice about Abraham’s, Issac’s, and Jacob’s sin?

* Compare and contrast the demon possessed man, Jairus/daughter, and the woman with the issue of blood.
