Bible Reading Plan (Day 5)

DAY FIVE — Genesis 5, Matthew 5

Gen 5

Here we encounter our first real genealogy. These tell us that the Biblical accounts can be confirmed mathematically. Frankly, we can “count backwards” to creation.

The 7th from Cain shows depravity. The 7th from Seth shows hope. Cain’s line is damned. Seth’s line… the beginning of Messiah.

Mt 5

Here we enter one of the most beloved portions of Scripture. There are few parts of Holy Writ which have attracted as much attention and devotion as these next few chapters. I regret that I cannot go into this as deep as I wish due to the time allowed.

Surrounded by a throng of people looking for a miracle and seeking a sign, the Saviour what He does best. As a better Moses, He brings forth not Law, but Fulfillment.

Questions to Ponder:

* Make a time line that shows how long everyone in Chapter 5 lived in relation to each other. (Save it for later.) Did Noah sit on Adam’s knee?

* Which part of Mt 5 gives you the most trouble? Why? (By that I mean which verse or verses do you kind of wish weren’t there?)

* Which part of Mt 5 is the most affirming? Why? (By that I mean which verse or verses do you want to have burned into your memory?)
